Peripheral Arterial and Venous Diseases Overview

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common condition characterized by narrowed or blocked arteries, primarily caused by atherosclerosis, which leads to reduced blood circulation in the limbs, with legs being the most commonly affected area. Risk factors include smoking, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, stroke, and age over 60. Symptoms include leg pain during activity, improved with rest, and in severe cases, pain while lying flat. Other symptoms include muscle weakness, hair loss, shiny skin, cool extremities, decreased pulses, and ulcers. Diagnosis involves non-invasive tests like vascular ultrasound and ankle brachial index. Treatment includes exercise, medications, and minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty, with bypass surgery as an option in severe cases. Peripheral venous disease encompasses superficial and deep venous disease, caused by valve malfunction and clots in larger veins respectively, with treatments including compression stockings, exercise, blood thinners, and minimally invasive procedures like venous ablation and angioplasty.
