About 80 percent of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, and this pain can range from mild to debilitating. Although many people believe they have to just live with it, various treatment options can greatly alleviate this pain. One of these is spinal decompression therapy, which in itself is a painless procedure and only lasts about 30 minutes per session.
In order to identify the best back pain treatment for you, talk with one of our chiropractors. It’s important to understand the cause of your back pain, and treatment regimens may include spinal decompression therapy along with various other remedies.
Basic Causes of Back Pain
The back consists of a complex series of bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles, so a wide range of issues can cause back pain, such as sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured disks, or irritated joints. The pain can be chronic, such as in the case of osteoarthritis, or temporary and sudden, such as in the case of a sports injury, lifting an object, or slipping on ice.
In addition to arthritis and injury, common causes of back pain include poor posture, obesity, psychological stress, and disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, or blood blots.
How Spinal Decompression Therapy Could Help
Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine as the patient lies on a specialized bed.
Through motorized traction, pressure is taken off the spinal disks, which are gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This, in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal.
Our physicians utilize this therapy in candidates with severe spinal conditions such as:
- Bulging discs/pinched nerve
- Disc herniation
- Sciatica
- Degenerative discs
- Whiplash
- Radicular pain
Different chiropractors may recommend a different number of sessions depending on a patient’s needs. Typically, treatment consists of a series of 15 to 30 sessions, lasting 30 to 45 minutes each, over a four- to six-week period.
