What is Diagnostic Imaging & Radiology?

Diagnostic imaging and radiology procedures are used to identify and diagnose a range of disease, illness, and injury using a wide array of advanced technology. For example, an x-ray may be used to confirm a broken limb or an ultrasound can identify abnormalities in the heart. The goal of diagnostic imaging is to assist physicians and patients with making the best medical decisions possible by confirming the presence and progression of disease or injury. Insight’s radiology team also works closely with physicians to treat a wide variety of medical conditions, such as broken bones and cancer.

The most common forms of imaging and radiology include:

  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Digital Mammography
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Interventional Radiology (IR)
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Ultrasounds
  • X-ray
  • Bone Density

Diagnostic Imaging & Radiology Specialties

Computed Tomography (CT)

Also known as a CT scan, this diagnostic imaging procedure uses x-ray and computer technology to obtain internal images of the body, including organs, bones, muscles, and blood vessels.

Digital Mammography

Using electronic conductors, digital mammography displays a clear and accurate image of the interior of the breast. This technology is critical for early screening and diagnosis of breast diseases.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

PET scans are used to measure metabolic activity in cells and body tissues. This technology is effective in identifying many conditions, including cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

An MRI uses magnets, radio waves, and computer technology to produce clear images of structures inside the body. MRIs help physicians diagnose and monitor conditions, such as tumors and inflammation.

Interventional Radiology (IR)

Interventional radiology is an imaging technique that allows physicians to diagnose and treat a range of conditions such as cancer without major surgery. Most IR treatments are minimally invasive.

Pediatric Radiology

With special training in conditions affecting adolescents, pediatric radiologists work closely with pediatricians to accurately interpret the results of imaging tests in children to make a correct diagnosis.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine uses radioactive substances to view the function of organs and tissues inside the body for diagnosis. This technology also treats conditions by targeting and destroying diseased organs or tissue.

Ultrasounds

An ultrasound uses sound waves to view organs, tissues, and other structures inside the body. Unlike x-rays, this technique does not use radiation and can show motion, such as a heartbeat or blood flow.

X-ray

An x-ray uses safe levels of radiation to produce images of structures inside the body, such as bones and the chest. Compared to other imaging techniques, x-rays are fast and can be viewed digitally within minutes.

Bone Density

Bone density imaging uses x-rays to measure calcium and other bone minerals in the body. Fast and painless, this technology determines risk for broken bones and confirms the presence of osteoporosis.
